MARYNKA. ft. MAJOR SPOILERS for the midnight girls. by alicia jasinska i'll write up something more formal eventually but sparknotes — ‣‣ when marynka was still human, she was a peasant and orphaned girl, raised by her uncle and aunt. when she was 13, she got trampled by a nobleman's horse, and was left for dead in the forest. ‣‣ red jaga saw her stubbornly clinging to life and brought her back up to health — replacing her bones with magic and her blood with fire, effectively making her a monster of midday to do red jaga's evil bidding. ‣‣ red jaga and marynka have an abusive relationship, although marynka doesn't necessarily see it that way. most of her goals in life boil down to the hope of receiving some affection from red jaga, who mostly just slaps her around and verbally berates her for doing a bad job. ‣‣ the most important of tasks she's sent out to complete is the murdering and capturing of princes' hearts, which supply red jaga with power. however, red jaga isn't the only jaga, and her sister black jaga has her own helper named zosia, or midnight. ‣‣ essentially, marynka forces herself into competition with zosia, where she constantly fails at getting the better of her. ‣‣ ‣‣ ‣‣ ‣‣ ‣‣
